NATIONAL GAMES| The Vanuatu National Games were begun in 1982 as the Inter District Games (IDG). During that time there were only Four districts, Nothern District, Central District No. 1, Central District No.2 and Southern District. The first IDG was held in Vila, the second in Santo in 1984, the third in 1986 in Tanna and the 4th was held in Ambae in 1988.The aim of these Games is to encourage sports at the grassroot level, to identify sporting talent for further development, to unite the peoples and culture of Vanuatu.Unfortunately after the last IDG was held in 1988, the main sponsors withdrew and only through the initiative of VASANOC by the drafting of a National Games Charter, that they were revived under the name, Provincial Games. In the first Provincial Games, the sports that were offered were, Athletics, Basketball, Boxing, Football, Handball, Netball, Petanque and Volleyball. In all there were 800 athletes. The 2nd Games were held in the MALAMPA Province in 1999, at Lakatoro. Karate was added to the original list of sports as a demonstration. These Games were highly successful proving that the concept of a national games could work poutside of the main centres in small rural areas. The 3rd Provincial Games were held in the Shefa Province in Port Vila attracting close to 1400 athletes from all over the Country. It was in these Games that ID Cards were introduced. The 4th Games were held in Tanna in the TAFEA Province in 2003. It was here that the Games cycle was changed to 3 years instead of 2. These Games were known for the a website that was setup by Sportingpulse for it. It was also in the Tafea Games that POrt Vila did not come first in the overall Medal Tally, that honour going to the host province,Tafea. The 5th Provincial Games were held in Ambae island in the province of PENAMA in August 2006.In the Penama Games, the hosts came first in the Medal Tally boosted by their students selected from the successful annual Penama Inter Secondary School Association (PISSA) Games. The big question is are we ready for 2017 Mini-South Pacific Games to be hosted in Vanuatu? Does the Ministry responsible and Government of the day have any plans for this coming games? Wanem ting ting blong u?
