NATIONAL GO FISHING DAY Today is a day to take some time from your daily routine to call a friend and then go find a stream, a pond, a lake or a river, bait your hooks, cast out your poles and catch a fish or two as it in National Go Fishing Day! Fishing is a favorite recreational pastime of many across the United States. The ancient practice of fishing dates back to at least the beginning of the Paleolithic period about 40,000 years ago. Early cave painting show that fish consumption was important for survival. The earliest known English essay on recreational fishing was published in 1496. It was during the 16th and 17th centuries that recreational fishing gained it’s popularity. In 1653, Izaak Walton published a book titled, The Compleat Angler or Contemplative Man’s Recreation. Walton’s book is the definitive work that champions the position of the angler who loves fishing just for the sake of it. Pleasure or sport is what draws recreational fishers to the waters while commercial fishers fish for profit. Recreational fishing includes conventions, rules, licensing restrictions and laws that limit the way in which fish may be caught. A rod, reel, line and hooks, with any one of the different forms of bait or lures, are the most common form of recreational fishing. The practice of catching (or attempting to catch) fish with a hook is known as angling. It is sometimes expected, required or just practiced by some, while angling, that the fish be returned to the water. This is known as catch and release. Knowledge about the fish and their behavior, in the area that you are at, include migration, foraging and habitat. This knowledge will help you to use the right fishing techniques needed for a successful fishing adventure. There are some fishermen that still follow fishing folklore, which claim that fish feeding patterns are influenced by the position of the sun and the moon. Celebrate National Go Fishing Day with a few friends or the whole family, in a boat or on the shore, catching fish until you must go home.
