NATIONAL POLICE WEEK: SUN MAY 11th - SAT MAY 17th In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police Week. Citizens of the United States are asked to pause and reflect upon the service and sacrifices made by our nation’s law enforcement officers including and especially for those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their life in the line of duty. As a symbolic reminder of those sacrifices, all week long our Kiel police officers will wear mourning bands over our badges to honor our fallen law enforcement brothers and sisters. Members of our Police Department’s Honor Guard traveled to Madison yesterday to participate in memorial events there honoring and remembering fallen officers at the Wisconsin Memorial on the Capitol grounds. We will also attend a memorial event right here in Manitowoc County on May 15th at 245pm located at the Manitowoc County Courthouse. Unfortunately, the Kiel Police Department has a name etched on the national memorial in Washington D.C., the WI Memorial in Madison, and also at the local memorial in Manitowoc. On August 23rd, 1914 Marshal Edmund Hanske died when he was hit by a car on Fremont Street as he tried to stop a vehicle for speeding. The driver of the car that hit Marshal Hanske fled the scene but was captured and convicted of his death. As part of our newly constructed Police Department, we are designing a flag pole memorial to formally recognize not only Marshal Hanske’s sacrifice to the citizens of Kiel, but also to remember all of our fellow law enforcement officers who died while serving others. If you wish to donate resources to this memorial project, please contact me directly to talk about how you can help make this memorial possible. Thank you. Dave Funkhouser Chief of Police
