NATURALLY NATIVE SCREENING: UCLA FILM AND TELEVISION ARCHIVES EVENT NOVEMBER 14 The award winning classic Native American female empowerment film hailed by critics and educators alike, will screen in the UCLA Film & Television Archive Retrospective “Through Indian Eyes” at the Billy Wil- der Theater November 14th, 2014 at 7:30pm. Filmmakers Valerie Red-Horse Mohl, Jennifer Wynne Farmer and Dawn Jackson will be present at the screening for a Q&A session after the film. The Billy Wilder Theater is located at 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90024 (Parking is available in the lot under the Billy Wilder Theater. Enter from Westwood Blvd., just north of Wilshire Blvd.) ABOUT NATURALLY NATIVE Producer/Co-Director/Screenwriter, Valerie Red-Horse offers a moving tale of Native self-betterment and triumph in this disarming feature drama about three American Indian sisters, raised separately in foster fami- lies, who now seek a shared destiny as entrepreneurs of a line of organic cosmetics. The way to success, however, is strewn with practical, cultural and personal obstacles, the surmounting of which offers a drama rich with emotion, from a perspective heretofore rarely treated on screen. Itself a noteworthy achievement by Native American women, the film was financed by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, premiered as a Sundance Film Festival official selection, won multiple awards at global film festivals, enjoyed a limited but successful theatrical release, debuted on television as a Turner Classics national broadcast and launched a shampoo/ haircare line. 35mm, color, 107 min. ABOUT THROUGH INDIAN EYES: NATIVE AMERICAN CINEMA Over the last 25 years, a renaissance in independent Native American filmmaking has occurred. Financed variously by tribal com- munities and non-Native sources, these films have been guided by Indian eyes, i.e. directed by Native Americans. The Archive is greatly pleased to be able to present this program of works produced in Canada and the United States, representing a cross-section of tribal communities. Series curators: Jan-Christopher Horak, Dawn Jackson (Saginaw Chippewa), Shannon Kelley, Paul Malcolm and Valerie Red-Horse Mohl (Cherokee). Through Indian Eyes: Native American Cinema was generously supported by the San Ma- nuel Band of Mission Indians and Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
