NBC Pleased With ArcelorMittal Activities The Director-General of the National Bureau of Concessions (NBC), Ms. Ciatta Bishop has lauded the management of Arcelor Mittal for its efforts to transform the lives of Liberians through its mining operations and social commitments. Speaking at a dinner hosted by the management of the company for a visiting team from the Bureau, Ms. Bishop expressed satisfaction at the company’s initiatives in the areas of health, education and the general welfare of its employees and residents in nearby communities. The NBC Director-General arrived in Yekepa recently as head of a five man NBC team with a mission to get familiar with and assess the company’s activities within the context of the Mineral Development Agreement that was signed between the company and the Liberian Government in 2005 and amended in 2013. The visit included a tour of Tokadeh North, at the Tokadeh Mines, where the delegation observed the mining operations, and asked questions regarding the production level, environmental hazards, Fe content of the ore as well as incoming Phase II engineering works: the power plant, concentrator plant and tailings facility. The delegation was led on the tour to the mines by Mr. Prasad, Sushil, Gomez, Jallah Tom Shepard and other members of AML. Following the visit to the Mines, the delegation visited the newly renovated maternity ward at the AML Hospital. At the hospital the delegation stated their admiration for the renovation work and was informed that the entire hospital will be renovated in three months. The sentiments were the same when the delegation toured the Vocational Training Center, the ArcelorMittal High School, and the Area B Elementary School, where the NBC Director took some time to talk to the students and encourage them to pursue their education. During the dinner held in honor of the visiting delegation, the Chief Technical Officer of the Company, Mr. Prasad Prayaga Sreenivas, said it was an honor to receive the delegation and stated the company’s openness to any suggestion or advice that may be forthcoming from the Director-General and her team. For her part, Director-General Bishop explained to the members of management that her institution serves a regulatory role for all concessions, private-public partnerships and all long term contracts in Liberia. She also stated that her institution performs monitoring and evaluation activities regarding benchmarks set with these concessions within a given period. She further explained that her role was to be objective in monitoring and evaluating concessionaires operating in the country. She thanked the management for the headways they are making in providing social services to the residents of the company, and assured them that her office will provide the support needed to make it possible for the government and the concessionaire to exist in a win-win situation. She also thanked the management for the time taken to conduct the tour which gave her a whole new trajectory by which to evaluate the company.
