NDTV:Kashmir Floods: Army Vehicles Pelted With Stones in Srinagar SRINAGAR: Anger mounted today among the residents of Srinagar over being stranded for days in the flooded city. This evening, army vehicles were pelted with stones as they tried to make their way through the city, loaded with supplies including water and food. In the morning, four Air Force helicopters carrying supplies could not land at the helipad at the Governors residence after threats of stoning. Aggressive crowds mean we are facing difficulties in rescue work, said OP Singh, the chief of the National Disaster Relief Force or NDRF, which, with the armed forces, has so far rescued nearly 80,000 people in an expansive and tireless effort. Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag, reiterated, We understand people can be upset. The army will remain on the job till the last man is rescued. But residents who have been rescued say relief supplies are taking too long to reach them. And thousands remain marooned on the roofs of their houses for the fourth day in a row. There has been no rain since yesterday, allowing new momentum to the rescue operations. But many parts of Srinagar remain cut off days after the swollen Jhelum River deluged the city. Hundreds of villages in Southern Kashmir are submerged still in the worst floods to have hit the state in over a century. On Wednesday it emerged that one rescue officer had been wounded in an attack by furious residents earlier in the week as anger boiled over. National Disaster Response Force director general OP Singh told NDTV an aggressive crowd had tried to attack a rescue boat, injuring the officer, who was flown to Chandigarh for treatment. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah last evening said, I understand the anger but it is not true that nothing is happening... this situation is unprecedented. He also said that before Srinagar was flooded, warnings were announced at mosques and from police vehicles, urging residents to move to higher ground. I am sorry to say that they willingly ignored these warnings...choosing to stay where they are, the chief minister said.
