NE actresses who made it big – Part 2 1) SEEMA BISWAS Seema Biswas was born on 14th January 1965 in Nalbari, Assam. She is an Indian film and theatre actress and has acted in Hindi films like Bandit Queen (1994), where she acted as Phoolan Devi. She has a reputation for performing strong character roles. Biswas won the 1996 National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the film Bandit Queen. She won the 2000 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the 2006 Best Actress Genie Award for her role as Shakuntala in Deepa Mehta’s Water (2005). 2) UDITA GOSWAMI Udita Goswami was born on 9th February 1984 in Dehradun. However, the actress has a deep connection with Shillong as her mother is from Shillong. She started as a model and did her very first fashion feature photo-shoot with professional photographer Anand Seth. She has acted in films like ‘Paap’, ‘Zeher’,’Aksar’,’Dil Diya Hai’. She has appeared in a music video by Ahmed Patel titled ‘Kya Khoob Lagti Ho’ opposite Upen Patel. She was award presenter in 2004 for the ’49th Filmfare Awards’. She has also been involved in political awareness & has done a show for the ‘Sick Kids Foundation’. 3) KAREN SHENAZ DAVID Karen Shenaz David was born in Shillong, Meghalaya. However, she was raised in Canada and then at age 17, David moved to London to study at the Guildford School of Acting. She acted in two short television videos, Dancers: The Trailer (2002), playing the role of Jenny, and The Paper Round (2002). She then landed a role in the musical Bollywood Queen (2003). Through 2004 and 2005, she played Scarlet in MTV’s Top Buzzer. 4) David played Lyla, a main character in the London-based film Take 3 Girls (2006). Other work during this time includes Steven Seagal’s Flight of Fury (2007) as Barnes’ Operational Soldier Flanders, The Colour of Magic (2008) as Liessa, the Dragonlady, and The Legend of Dick and Dom (2009) as Fairy Frampton. David appeared as the female lead, Layla, in The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior (2008), filmed in Cape Town, South Africa. 5) BALA HIJAM Bala Hijam was born on June 9, 1991 in . Bala made her film debut in Oken Amakcham’s Telanga Mamei a Manipuri film as supporting actress. She has acted in Ravindra Surya Bashi’s Zindagi on the Rocks. “She won the Special Jury Award 2011 from Film Academy Manipur (FAM). She debuted in Malayalam cinema with Sameer Thahir’s Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi. The film “Zindagi on the Rocks” has been shot substantially in Himachal Pradesh, including in places like the barren, oxygen-starved, arctic deserts surrounding Lake Chandrataal (4,300 metres/ 14,100 ft), where no feature film has ever been shot. Chandrataal in Spiti district is almost 4,000 ft above the treeline. Zindagi has a romantic duet by the banks of the lake. Bala speaks Hindi with a slight Manipuri accent.
