NEW----From Bathonian Sands This is a fabulous specimen of the early fossil sand dollars that thrived in the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) through the Upper Cretaceous (Turonian) period during the Mesozoic Era, roughly 155-165 million years ago. Pyrugus marmoti is the species, order Clypeasteroid. These sand dollars were plentiful when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and shared the beach with the first birdlike dinosaurs (Archeopteryx) and the Pterids. Early mammals were also emerging at the time that this particular shell would have washed up on the prehistoric beach. It was found in Madagascar. The sand dollars and sea urchins are basically the same animal, belonging in the same family. But depending on the age, the fossil shells of these can look entirely different. There are many many species. This specimen measures 3 in diameter and has a solid weight. It was polished to bring out the beauty of its markings. Beaded almost exclusively with antique faceted green Charlotte beads from the Victorian era, accented with contemporary seed beads and faceted Swarovski crystals. A beautiful drop made from a handcrafted lamp work Nobilis shell in black and green dichroic glass with a fringing of crystal and freshwater pearl echoes the bead woven chain above. Copper plate toggle closure.
