NEW AND EXPANDED YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES A wide range of services have been funded through Latrobe Council’s Annual Emerging Needs and Arts, Culture and Festivals Sponsorship for the 2014-15 financial year. Youth are a strong focus with the funding including the establishment of a youth project by the Latrobe Men’s Shed. The basis of the youth project is to access the extensive craft and construction experience of our members and pass these onto the younger generation in a welcoming environment. “The funding will enable the purchase of equipment and materials to undertake small building projects and provide life skills to young people,” said Latrobe Men’s Shed Secretary, Pastor Ralph Terry. Hot on the heels of a successful basketball season, with both the men and women teams making it through to the finals series, the Latrobe Basketball Club Inc has been funded to purchase equipment to assist the long term sustainability of youth development. President, Mrs Rosemary Muir, said “the youth development initiative, while based around basketball skills, provides many life skills including team work, co-operation, leadership, communication and compromise. With the high obesity rates on the North West Coast, the Club are grateful to Latrobe Council in providing this funding to expand physical activity opportunities for young people throughout the community.” The Rubicon Sea Scout group has received funding to purchase equipment that supports land based training. “We needed additional equipment to assist in teaching the right methods on land and confidence of our young people before they took to the variable elements of the water,” said Mr Ian Ball. For more information about any of these organisations, please contact Pastor Terry on 6427 0006, Mrs Muir on 0407 278 977 or Mr Ball on 0421 011 876.
