NEW DOG DAY arrived at Putnamville Correctional Facility!!! The 4 - TopicsExpress

NEW DOG DAY arrived at Putnamville Correctional Facility!!! The 4 prison fosters on the “Home for The Holidays Haul” have finally arrived, one day after they were expected. The inmate-handlers understand that delays can always happen. It still makes for a long wait. Their greyhounds spent one night inside the homes of our volunteers. (Normally they are delivered straight to the prison an hour after unloading from the haul. But we were very late into the evening when the haul pulled into Indianapolis, so we went to plan B.) They all slept – except Cheryl who created a fuss! (We think the female of the group might have a lot of opinions (!!!) during her incarceration with the 3 male greyhounds.) Once inside the prison, each dogs quickly selected his/her team of 2 handlers. Our volunteers supervised as the dogs were bathed, fed, let loose in the dog run, and then settled in for another nap. We handed out the Christmas photo to the handlers. (It posts tomorrow if you want to check back.) We gave instructions for the greyhounds’ first week in the CLIFF dorm. Most of the handlers have been with us a bit, but as usual, some handlers in training are new. We had 4 of our Prison Team Volunteers coaching the handlers. Some of our handlers do not get any family visits, just the ‘visits’ from our volunteers at our Dog Meetings. So the new greyhounds arriving just before Christmas help to cheer things up more than most of us can probably understand. We have been told, “Being with the greyhounds is the closest to home that I have felt in here. They bring a bit of home to me.” The greyhounds are the best Christmas gift we could give them right now… Merry Christmas handlers!
