NEW EXHIBITS OPEN IN 101 GALLERY Two new exhibits have opened in 101 Gallery at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy. The first is “The Artist and the Bucking Horse,” a collection of artwork in different mediums with the iconic bucking horse as the subject. The majority of the artwork in this collection was accumulated by Valona Varnum Crowell and donated to the museum in 1983. The collection originally contained 44 pieces. A few additional pieces have been added over the years from other donors and artists. Some of the artists represented are Walt LaRue, Frank Serratoni, Fredrick Remmington, Edd Hayes, Bob Scriver, Chris Navarro, Murray Tinkelman and Al Luster among many others. The best introduction to this collection was written by Ms. Crowell herself: “Every western artist has done his or her own version of the bucking horse. Some artists, like Will James, who is known as “the bucking horse artist,” have made it a trademark. This collection started with the interest of seeing each artist’s interpretation of the same subject. Some of the artists were working cowboys or rodeo riders. All were observers of the sport and knew the situation well. You will see the comic as well as the serious side through each artist giving his or her idea of the bucking horse.” The other piece of the new exhibit is a collection of bits and spurs; the Ardourel Bit and Spur Collection. Dr. Ralph Ardourel donated his collection, which had been amassed by Rollie Leonard, to the Hall in 1983. Mr. Leonard’s land was the location of the original Boulder Pow Wow. The pieces are from contestants in the Pow Wow. The collection of 168 pairs of spurs and 82 bits features a wide mix of styles including Mexican, Californian and Texan. One of the featured makers is the Crockett Company which is not surprising due to the fact that during the time Mr. Leonard was collecting the pieces, the company was located in Boulder, Colorado. Other makers include North and Judd Manufacturing, Eduardo Grijalva, P.M. Kelley, Wilmer Pabst, Renalde, G.S. Garcia and Ricardo. The collections will be featured in the 101 Gallery for several months.
