NEW FOX NEWS MEMO: Stop screaming About The American OBOLA Epidemic And Start Screaming About The China Climate Change Deal U.S., China Reach Landmark Climate Change Deal China and the United States made common cause on Wednesday against the threat of climate change, staking out an ambitious joint plan to curb carbon emissions as a way to spur nations around the world to make their own cuts in greenhouse gases. The landmark agreement, jointly announced here by President Barack Obama and President Xi Jinping, includes new targets for carbon emissions reductions by the United States and a first-ever commitment by China to stop its emissions from growing by 2030. A climate deal between China and the United States, the worlds No. 1 and No. 2 carbon polluters, is viewed as essential to concluding a new global accord. Administration officials said the agreement, which was worked out secretly between the United States and China over nine months and included a letter from Obama to Xi proposing a joint approach, could galvanize efforts to negotiate a new global climate agreement by 2015. It was the signature achievement of an unexpectedly productive two days of meetings between the leaders. Obama and Xi also agreed to a military accord designed to avert clashes between Chinese and American planes and warships in the tense waters off the Chinese coast, as well as an understanding to cut tariffs for technology products. People who are criticizing this deal dont understand the situation very well. China agreeing to produce 20% of its energy from zero emission sources by 2030 and to cap its emissions are both historic firsts. In the past all China would agree to is to reduce the growth of its emissions, which would quite obviously be no solution at all. China is in a different situation than the U.S. because (a) were ahead of it on reducing emissions, and (b) its massive population presents unique challenges. This factoid should demonstrate the challenge it faces: To meet its 20% goal, the new zero-emission nuclear, wind and solar energy plants that China creates will equal the entire electrical energy output of the United States. Did President Xi Jinping keep a straight face when they jointly annouced this? China believing the U.S. on emissions reductions is a leap of faith too, considering that the new Congressional majority is full of anti-science climate deniers. Some FOX News talking heads would rather have us not make the attempt at all to reach a climate accord -- because of cheap cynicism that nobody will meet their pledges. How does doing nothing make more sense than setting goals and pushing towards a global consensus on emissions reductions? With the Red Threat of the Soviet Union long gone, with Russia a mere shadow of its former self, and only stateless terrorists to fight, peaceful and mutually beneficial trade and environmental pacts with China could mean the loss of the the last Big Boogeyman on the planet for FOX News to fearmonger us with.
