NEW ZEALAND A FIJI NATIONAL WHOSE WORK PERMIT EXPIRED 14 YEARS AGO IN OCTOBER 1999 AND SINCE THEN AVOIDING DETECTION & DEPORTATION ORDER HAS FINALLY BEEN NABBED BY THE IMMIGRATION AUTHORITIES AND DENIED BAIL A Fijian national whose work permit expired 14 years ago has been remanded by Immigration New Zealand after he “ignored” a deportation order. Appearing before Judge Cameron at Whanganui District Court last week, Seru Penisoni Bogidrau, was denied bail. Whanganui Chronicles reports that Bogidrau, a forestry worker, arrived in New Zealand in March 1999 on a work visa which expired in October the same year. Upon the expiration of his visa, Bogidrau applied for a visitor’s visa, which was declined. He made no further applications after that. And in November 2001, he was issued a removal order and asked to leave voluntarily. Duty solicitor Stephen Ross, who appeared on behalf and on instructions from Bogidraus lawyer, Mark McGhie, said he was well known to the Fijian and Polynesian community. Ross also argued that he had stable employment and accommodation and had no runnings with the law, intending to contest any deportation. Prosecution lawyer Harry Mallalieu opposed the bail application and said that Bogidrau had flown under the radar since 2001 and had had slight contact with the law being caught driving while disqualified in 2001 and 2007. Judge Cameron said there seemed to be no sense of urgency either by Bogidrau or McGhie in trying to find the defendants passport, and Bogidrau had refused to complete alternative travel documents. “Hes obviously keen to do what he can to stay in the country, but hes the author of his own misfortune,” the judge said. Judge Cameron said Bogidrau had shown a lack of co-operation in failing to sign the Fijian travel document in lieu of his passport and, with his other actions, was indicative of someone doing all he can do to avoid going back to his home country.
