NEWS ALERT: Green Army open for applications in Capricornia Applications are now open for community-led Green Army projects that support environment and heritage conservation activities across Capricornia. Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said the Green Army initiative provided young unemployed people with a regular work routine and the opportunity to learn skills while working on supervised projects that benefit the community. “Applications are now open for community organisations, environment groups and local councils to apply for Green Army projects in their area,” Ms Landry said. “Successful applicants will receive a team of up to nine Green Army participants, a team supervisor and project specific materials, such as seedlings, herbicide, mulch, matting and tree guards, in addition to the basic materials required to deliver a project.” Service Providers, appointed by the Australian Government will work with local councils and other project sponsors to deliver projects in Capricornia. Under the Green Army scheme projects must run for 20-26 weeks and may be carried out on either urban or regional public land, indigenous-held lands, or private land where there is a clear community and environmental and heritage benefit. Ms Landry said the initiative is another step the Federal Government was taking to assist unemployed young people in Capricornia – currently facing a down turn in coal and beef and other sectors. “The Government is looking for environment and conservation projects that will make a real difference to the environment and our local community, while providing meaningful training and skills to young people in our local area,” Ms Landry said. Green Army projects may involve projects like: • Restoring and protecting native habitat • Weeding and re-vegetation • Cleaning up waterways, creeks and rivers • Fencing • Gully remediation and preventing erosion • Protecting and conserving heritage places • Monitoring and surveying on indigenous and non-indigenous lands. Applications for projects under round two close on Tuesday 9 December 2014. To be eligible, projects must be ready to commence between 1 January and 30 June 2015. • For project guidelines visit: environment.gov.au/green-army • Organisations wishing to find out more getting involved can also call 1800 780 730 • Young people interested in participating should contact 1800 780 730 • Enquiries can also be emailed to: [email protected]
