LIGHTNING RESPONSIBLE FOR SEVERAL SMALL FIRES IN THE AREA Nine fires were reported after lightning from recent thunderstorms came through the area. According to the Forest Service, lightning sparked fires throughout the Kern River Ranger District and the first one was reported shortly after 1PM this past Monday, July 22nd. The fires were scattered throughout the Kern Plateau, along the West Plateau (which includes Horse Meadow and Cherry Hill Road), the west side of the Upper Kern River and in the Piute Mountains near Claraville. All of these fires are limited to single trees and suppression action is being taken, especially considering the extreme fire conditions that currently exist in the area. The only fire that is not being handled by fire crews on the ground is the 15-acre Cane Fire, which is located in the Domeland Wilderness. This fire is inaccessible due to the terrain, but helicopters have been making water drops on the fire. For more information, contact the Forest Service.
