NEWS FOR WEDNESDAY, JULY 3RD, 2013 STATE GETS READY TO SEND OUT SECOND ROUND OF FIRE PREVENTION FEES Get ready for another round of Fire Prevention Fees. It was just announced that the second round of bills for homeowner in rural areas – such as the Kern River Valley – will begin going out on July 15th. The bills will be sent in alphabetical order starting with Alameda County to the owners of record as of July 2012. These controversial fees are being used to help defray the cost of protecting the homes located on roughly 31 million acres in State Responsibility Areas where CAL FIRE is responsible for the protection and suppression of wildfires. OBAMA ADMINISTRATION DELAYS BUSINESS HEALTH REQUIREMENT FOR ONE YEAR As the implementation of Obamacare approaches, many in the business community had complained that the requirement that companies with 50 or more employees provide them with healthcare was too complicated. In order to help with the confusion, it was announced yesterday that this provision wouldn’t take effect until 2015, which is one year later than the other parts of the health law. However, the other parts of the law – including the individual mandate which requires people to purchase health coverage – will still go into effect on Jan. 1st, 2014. SENIOR CENTER OPEN AS COOLING CENTER TODAY It has been announced that the Senior Center in Lake Isabella will be open as a Cooling Center today. These Cooling Centers are available to use by anyone and they are a way for those who need to to get out of the heat for a while. The Senior Center will be open as a Cooling Center to day from 1PM-8PM. There’s been no now word yet on whether it will be open tomorrow. FOURTH OF JULY CLOSURES Tomorrow is the Fourth of July and that means many businesses and government offices will be closed. Closures include: most banks and savings and loans; all city, county, state, and federal offices; the DMV; the Post office and the all courts. LOCAL SPORTS NEWS The Bakersfield Blaze lost again to Lancaster last night as the Jethawks beat the Blaze 12-1. The series continues tonight in Lancaster at 7PM. FREE FISHING DAY THIS SATURDAY The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced that this Saturday, July 6th is a Free Fishing Day. That means that anyone can fish for free without purchasing a fishing license; however, all other rules and regulations - such as bag and size limits – will remain in effect. This is the first of two Free Fishing Days. The next one will occur Sept. 7th. WOODCUTTING REPORT According to the Forest Service, the following areas are all open Cannell Meadow, Greenhorn, Breckenridge, the Piutes and the Hot Springs Area 440. The Forest Service also announced that Sherman Pass Road is now open.
