NEWS FROM DZANGA SANGHA Today is Thursday 11 July, and the situation is Bayanga has deteriorated substantially, Currently however this has not affected the elephants or the gorilla programs which are running smoothly enough under the circumstances, but effects the local population both Bantu and Ba’aka considerably. There is nothing new coming from WWF in Yaoundé, but my sources and friends and the ground in Both Bayanga, and the capital give are in contact and I have tried to summarize the latest given their information, as well as giving my own opinions. In Bayanga, Dzanga Sangha protected area, As in last week’s news, the Chinese Prospectors left Via Cameroon leaving a platoon of Seleka soldiers that were employed to protect them, behind. Given the fact that these soldiers have not been paid, this is a recipe for disaster. These soldiers immediately set about extorting money from as many of the locals as may have money as possible, and have become really unpopular in the village. Given that the platoon of Seleka have little or no chance of getting any income from the remaining people in Bayanga we feel that it is still quite likely that they become a threat to the natural resources, and In particular the elephants. The situation in the park remains calm with no reported threats to the elephants or gorillas at this time however the bushmeat poaching seems to be out of control and at some of the worst levels in some years. In Bangui the news is mixed, and some reports of violence continue, but overall the news from Bangui is a little more positive this week. Fomac troops assisted by loyal Seleka soldiers and French troops have started the process of disarming the rebels and repatriating mercenaries. This is of course also fraught with problems but in general feelings on the ground over the last week have been far more positive than in the preceding months. Please help support our campaign to return to Dzanga and have a presence on site for the coming month by visiting igg.me/at/sanghalodge/x/3576314 and donating a little towards this.
