Lawrence Loh, who will remain Music Director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, will join Symphoria at the start of the 2015-16 season. Presently, Loh also serves as Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, (Pittsburgh, PA), and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra. In his role as Symphoria’s Music Director, Loh will be the primary conductor and provide artistic leadership for the orchestra, including major roles in programming, artistic personnel, and outreach. “I am thrilled to have been appointed Music Director of Symphoria,” says Loh, who has served as Music Director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic since 2005. “Although I will transition out of my positions in Pittsburgh after the 2014-2015 season, I will continue as Music Director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic.” Regarding Maestro Loh’s continuing tenure with the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, Board president Ira C. Miller said, “Larry is one of the most talented young conductors in the U.S. today. He is clearly on the rise. Our Maestro has been instrumental in making our philharmonic one of the country’s finest regional orchestras, and we are so pleased he will be continuing with us. We are so proud of Larry and wish him great success in his exciting new challenge.” Loh has distinguished himself as a conductor in great demand around the world. Past and upcoming guest conducting credits include the National, Detroit, Dallas, Colorado and Knoxville Symphonies, Florida Orchestra and the Malaysian Philharmonic. Lawrence Loh was born in southern California and raised in Carlisle, PA. He received his Artist Diploma in Orchestral Conducting from Yale University, also earning the Eleazar de Carvalho Prize, given to the most outstanding conductor in the Yale graduating class. He also has degrees from the University of Rochester and Indiana University in Bloomington. “We are very excited that Larry has agreed to join Symphoria as Music Director,” Catherine Underhill, Managing Director of Symphoria, said. “His style of engaging with audiences and musicians alike was evident when he guest conducted here last November. We know that his musical stewardship will help create momentum for growth in a very positive way.” Symphoria is one of only two co-op orchestras in the U.S. Symphoria was founded by nearly 50 members of the former Syracuse Symphony Orchestra which, during its operation, was considered to be one of America’s top 50 orchestras. Next year the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic will perform its 43rd season at multiple venues: the FM Kirby Center for the Performing Arts and the Kirby Theater at Wyoming Seminary in Wilkes Barre/Kingston and the Scranton Cultural Center and the Theater at Lackawanna College in Scranton. In addition to concert hall performances, NEPA Phil’s Chamber Series is held at WVIA Theater and the orchestra’s gifts to the region are free Independence Day Concerts in downtown Scranton (July 3rd) and Kirby Park (July 4th.). Ensembles for the Philharmonic also perform in regional elementary and middle schools. Subscriptions are now on sale for the Philharmonic’s 2014-2015 season which opens on September 19 with pianist Jon Nakamatsu playing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1.
