NEWS PRESS RELEASE NR 18 – 13 September 30, 2013 FROM THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE 903RD INFANTRY (FIGHT & DEFEND) BRIGADE - 9TH INFANTRY (SPEAR) DIVISION, PHILIPPINE ARMY (Barangay Poblacion, Castilla, Sorsogon) FROM: 1LT BETHANY Q CADUNGAN (Brigade Spokesperson) 31IB TROOPS ENCOUNTER NPA REBELS IN SORSOGON>Castilla, Sorsogon– A composite platoon of 31st Infantry Battalion, 9th Infantry Division, Philippine Army under 1ST LIEUTENANT ABDUL HAMID M SALIK and 1ST LIEUTENANT DOMINIC DE GUZMAN figured in a series of skirmishes with more or less twenty (20) members of New People’s Army at about 9:00 am and 11:25 am yesterday at Barangay Sta Barbara and Sitio Kaprikuhan, San Isidro both of Bulusan, Sorsogon respectively. According to COLONEL JOSELITO KAKILALA, Commander of 903rd Infantry Brigade exercising operational control over 31st Infantry Battalion, the series of clashes with the rebels which both lasted for about ten (10) minutes were still part of the continuing tactical offensives of the soldiers aimed to track down the large band of heavily armed New People’s Army (NPA) who had evaded the government troops during the encounter on September 22, 2013 in the mountainous area of Juban, Sorsogon. The said combat operations were conducted in response to the anonymous information from a concerned civilian in the area of the suspicious presence of armed men conducting violent activities thereat. “In as much as we desire to put an end to our tactical offensives against the NPA rebels, their hostile reactions left us with no choice but to continue to locate them in their suspected lairs. We will continue to hunt them wherever they go. We will constrict their area of operations in order to leave them with no room where they can conduct their atrocities”, Colonel Kakilala further stated. COLONEL KAKILALA continue to call upon all the communists rebels to heed the government’s call to lay down their arms and avail of the “GUN FOR PEACE PROGRAM” in order to finally give peace a chance in the Province of Sorsogon. “The only way we can stop the tactical offensives is the surrender of the armed communist rebels. It is high time that they decide to come back in the mainstream society and live a normal and peaceful life with their loved ones. It burdens us more than anybody else to inflict casualties on them during encounters, as after all they are also Filipinos just like us”, COLONEL KAKILALA concluded. Based on intelligence reports, an undetermined number of the communist rebels suffered considerable casualties during the said encounters while no casualty on the side of the government troops.
