NEWS RELEASE December 12, 2014 NCEL Cops Regional Bright Spot Leadership Award Jamaica’s National College for Education Leadership (NCEL) has been awarded a Bright Spot Award in innovations in leadership development by the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development. NCEL was recently awarded under the Caribbean Leadership Project based on the success of its Effective Principals’ Training Programme (EPTP), which is being used to build capacity among school leaders in Jamaica. The Bright Spot Award recognises that the answers to complex problems, such as leadership development in emerging economies, already reside in those societies. Other awardees at the event which took place recently in Trinidad and Tobago were The Immigration and Passport Department (Grenada) and the Professional Development Programme for Returning National Scholars in Trinidad and Tobago. Principal Director of NCEL, Dr Maurice Smith says the recognition confirms that NCEL is moving in the right direction and is well positioned to becoming one of the Hemispheres premier providers of capacity building in the area of Educational Leadership. The EPTP emphasizes the practice of leadership more so than the theory, and the building of competencies rather than acquisition of concepts. This approach to leadership development has yielded new possibilities for individual growth, student learning and school transformation. To date, almost 600 educators in Jamaica have been exposed to Round One of the EPTP. NCEL has also offered elements of the programme to educators in the British Virgin Islands. =30=
