NEWS RELEASE JEFFERSON PARISH, LOUISIANA August 17, 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JEFFERSON PARISH PREPARES FOR POTENTIALLY HEAVY RAIN Jefferson Parish is closely monitoring a tropical weather system located in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico currently expected to track toward Northern Mexico or South Texas. The National Weather Service indicates this system has a 30% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone over the next 48 hours. At this time, forecasters are expecting this system to bring gusty winds and heavy rainfall to the New Orleans metropolitan area over the next few days. Widespread rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches with locally higher amounts are expected through early Tuesday. Heaviest rains are expected to impact coastal areas. Tide levels are estimated to be .5 to 1 foot above normal during this time along Gulf-facing shores of Louisiana and Mississippi. Jefferson Parish strongly encourages all citizens to take the necessary steps now to prepare your families, homes, and property should Jefferson Parish be impacted by this or any weather event. Residents in low lying areas of coastal Jefferson Parish outside levee protection, particularly Lafitte, Barataria, and Crown Point, should pay close attention to news reports to monitor weather conditions. Citizens are asked to help reduce the chance of street flooding by clearing debris from their streets and drains around their property; such debris impedes water flow into the drainage system. Parish Ordinance Section 36-188 prohibits motorists from traveling on flooded streets, which may increase the possibility of structural flooding due to wake action caused by moving vehicles. Jefferson Parish Public Works crews will be ready to respond as needed.
