NEWS UPDATES AT 7O’CLOCK WITH ORANGE. Private school owners will be forced to hike tuition fees if taxation on their institutions is approved. Government proposes to terminate income tax exemptions that education institutions have been enjoying in order to come up with domestic revenue which is meant to facilitate the biggest portion of the national budget. The school owners under their umbrella body, the National Private Educational Institutions Association , say they are currently burdened by huge taxes –majority of which are levied by local councils and another tax will only cripple their operations. They have asked government to avert the decision of the new tax. In the wake of two terrorist attacks in Mpeketoni- Kenya, Uganda has heightened security at all its border crossing points like Malaba, Katuna, Elegu and Oraba. There is tighter screening of immigrants. Checks on travellers’ luggage, travel documents, vehicles and transit cargo have been strengthened to detect terrorists and objects they use to make bombs. Uganda has for a while received threats from Al Shabaab terrorists vowing to cause harm due to the country’s involvement in a peacekeeping mission in Somalia. Kenya and Burundi have also been threatened with the later being bombed on several occasions. Uganda Police Force has urged Ugandans to be vigilant and security conscious. Uganda continues to suffer with corruption. Kabarole district chaireperson, Richard Rwabuhinga warns civil servernts against stealing government funds. He has also said that he is investigating a community development officer for allegedly stealing 50million shillings meant to support community groups. Rwabuhinga says if this officer is found guilty, he will be interdicted. Iraq has formally called on the US to launch air strikes against jihadist militants who have seized several key cities over the past week. Earlier the Sunni insurgents launched an attack on Iraqs biggest oil refinery at Baiji north of Baghdad. Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki earlier urged Iraqis to unite against the militants. Government forces are battling to push back ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) and its Sunni Muslim allies in Diyala and Salahuddin provinces, after the militants overran the second city, Mosul, last week. US President Barack Obama met senior Congress members yesterday to discuss the Iraq crisis. The White House said Mr Obama had reviewed their efforts to strengthen the capacity of Iraqs security forces to confront the threat from ISIL [ISIS], including options for increased security assistance. World Health Organization (WHO) says that the number of people killed by the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa has risen to 337. Fourteen deaths and 47 new cases were reported across the region over the last week. Guinea is worst-affected with 264 Ebola-related deaths. In Sierra Leone, there have been 49 deaths and in Liberia 24. The three countries have been battling to contain the outbreak since February.
