NEWS UPDATES AT 9 O’CLOCK WITH ORANGE. African leaders have been called upon by the UN to devise means through which the continent can exploit its resources and stop relying on donor aid. United Nations Development Programme Uganda Resident Representative Ahunna Eziakonwa said there’s no reason as to why Africa could continue begging with its abundant resources. She said that Africans need to move away from a dependant mindset. She was speaking at a function organized by Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment in Kampala. A number of schools under the Universal Primary Education in Budaka District charge Shs200 per pupil to buy chalk amid an increasing financial crisis. About 59 of the primary schools under the programme have not received UPE funds to attend to school demands, such as procurement of chalk, among other things. The deputy headmaster of Nyanza 11 Primary School in Kamonkoli Sub-county Michael Kirya said they had no option but to charge the pupils as government has delayed to deliver the funds. Meanwhile, the Budaka District inspector of schools, Christopher Weere, has confirmed that a number of schools are facing a financial crisis and will have to wait up to August when the money might be released. The Education sector continues to grapple with a number of challenges. Deposits of iron, copper, sulfates and nickel together with another an unidentified mineral yet to be tested have been discovered in Kiryandongo district, Bunyoro region. Minister of state for minerals Peter Lokeris confirmed the detection saying the minerals are being tested to establish whether they are in quantities that are commercially available. Pearl Uganda, a company licensed to prospect the area for mineral deposits discovered the traces after the drilling of Karuma hill just adjacent to Bweyale in the district. Bunyoro region is one of the areas with high mineral potential in the country and a target for mineral exploration experiments. Nine Palestinian militants have been killed in a series of Israeli air raids on the Gaza Strip. The armed wing of the Palestinian militant group Hamas says six of its fighters died in a single strike near Rafah in the south. Three others died in separate Israeli air strikes in response to at least 20 rocket attacks from Gaza. Tensions in the region are high following the murder of Palestinian teenager Mohammed Abu Khdair. Police believe there was a nationalist motive to his killing, and have arrested six Jewish suspects. The death followed the murder of three Israeli teenagers, whose bodies were found a week ago. Emergency services in Gaza confirmed only two deaths from the air strike in Rafah but four others are believed to be buried under the collapsed site. A seventh victim was reported killed in another attack. Earlier, two other Palestinian militants were killed in a separate air attack near a refugee camp in central Gaza. The Israeli military said the strikes were in response to rocket attacks against southern Israel and targeted terror sites and concealed rocket launchers.
