NEWS UPDATES AT 9 O’CLOCK WITH ORANGE. President Yoweri Museveni has called on the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to urgently intervene in efforts to protect Mt. Elgon in Eastern Uganda and save thousands of lives now at risk following increased encroachment of the forest and degrading agricultural practices at the slopes. Former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazai has pledged full support to his successor Dr Ruhakana Rugunda throughout his tenure of office. Rugunda, the new Prime minister of Uganda received an overwhelming majority vote in parliament during a session chaired by speaker Rebecca Kadaga. The Vice president Edward Ssekandi moved a motion to approve Rugunda describing him as a seasoned politician, freedom fighter, and a man with extensive experience in the public service. The motion was seconded by outgoing Premier Amama Mbabazi who said he has known Rugunda for the last 56 years and that the president made the right choice by appointing him number three in cabinet. The former Adjumani resident state attorney Francis Ocuga has denied charges of abuse of office. He was charged with three counts of abuse of office following allegations that he had directed an office attendant to prosecute many cases in the magistrate court on his behalf. Prosecution alleges that Ocuga while serving as the resident state Attorney abused his powers and his office after he permitted an office attendant identified as Abasi Ali who is not an employee under the DPP to record many police files between July and September 2013. He is also accused of withdrawing criminal proceedings of cases from court without the authority or approval of the DPP. As Hong Kong braces for huge pro-democracy rallies, leader CY Leung has urged protesters to back electoral reforms set out by Beijing. Speaking early on the National Day holiday, Mr Leung said Hong Kong should work with Beijing to achieve progress.
