NEWSFLASH! Even endurance athletes should watch what they eat... While running long distances on a regular basis may keep the weight off, reduce blood pressure and control cholesterol, it turns out that even this level of physical activity may not be enough to offset the negative health effects of bad eating habits. A recent study published in Missouri Medicine and additional research published earlier this year in the British Medical Journal found that regular marathon and triathlon participants actually had HIGHER levels if coronary-artery plaque than a control group of people who didnt exercise. Researchers believe that this may be because of a long-held misconception among endurance athletes. Many long-distance runners believe that they can eat whatever they want and that their exercise routine on its own will guarantee cardiovascular fitness.
