NFA releases 713,307 bags of rice for relief operations; helps own employees (Dec. 4, 2013) *From the National Food Authority The National Food Authority (NFA) had already issued 713,307 bags of rice, from January to end of November this year, to agencies conducting relief operations for victims of natural and man-made calamities across the country. Bulk of the rice stocks went to super typhoon Yolanda victims, totaling 597,707 bags as of December 2. The stocks were issued to relief distribution agencies such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), local government units (LGUs) the World Food Program and private charitable institutions. The others went to the victims of the various typhoons that hit other parts of the country, the earthquake that struck Bohol and Cebu and the man-made disasters such as the standoff in Zamboanga and the exodus of Filipinos back to Mindanao from another standoff in Malaysia. The NFA offices in Region 8 were among those heavily damaged by typhoon Yolanda, while NFA employees in the area also suffered heavy damage as their homes and properties were either totally destroyed or wiped out by the super howler. The NFA lost 33,000 bags of rice and 96,000 bags of palay to looters in its Alang-Alang, Leyte warehouse, in addition to 16,000 bags that were wet and damaged during the typhoon. A team from the Central Office was dispatched to assess the infrastructure damage and requirements for reconstruction and rehabilitation of the damaged structures and facilities. A Special Operations Emergency Management Team, composed of executives and staff from other NFA field offices, was formed to undertake overall management of NFA Region 8 while the regional office personnel were recovering from the devastation. The special management team held office in Catbalogan where some of the regional staff reported to work while the others opted to temporarily report for work at the NFA Cebu and Central Office in Quezon City. As of today, the NFA Region 8 office is back to normal operations. The office had been provided with logistical and personnel support from other NFA offices across the country, including generator sets, service vehicles, trucks, fuel, drivers and security personnel. NFA employees across the country were also mobilized to lend support to their colleagues in Region 8. A special assistance account for the Yolanda and earthquake victims was set up by NFA Management to receive cash donations for NFA employees in the affected areas. As of November 29, 2013, a total of P1,035,685.25 had been remitted to this special account. Of this amount, P844,215.25 is intended for the Yolanda victims and P191,470.00 is for the earthquake victims. Former NFA employees who are currently working or residing abroad also contributed to the fund. The NFA Management had also decided to forego the traditional Christmas party for employees and re-channel the budget for the celebration to further helping the affected NFA employees recover sooner from their losses. nfa.gov.ph
