NIGERIA UNION OF RAILWAY WORKERS 33 Ekololu Street, Surulere, Lagos. e-mail: nur_headquarter@yahoo 24TH December, 2014. PRESIDENT GENERAL’S YULETIDE/END OF YEAR MESSAGE TO ALL NIGERIAN RAILWAY WORKERS On behalf of the Central Working Committee (CWC) of our great Union and my humble self, I want to thank you all Nigerian Railway workers for your exemplary dedication, selflessness, self-sacrifice, and impressive attitude with which you have, this far, fraternized with my leadership in particular and the Union in general. I must also appreciate the continued confidence you all have reposed in the CWC and leadership of our Union without which absolutely nothing significant would have been achieved. Notwithstanding the fact that we encountered quite few number of challenges in our inter-face with the NRC management and in our legitimate struggles for better condition of service, your fraternal dedication to the course of the Union has remained very tremendous, unwavering and commendable. No doubt, your support and cooperation has made it possible for the Union to succeed clearly in achieving quite a number of staff welfare demands placed before the management and these include: payment of 40% of monthly salary (consolidated) to all staff as end-of-year bonus; payment of burial expenses of our deceased colleagues and co-workers; employment of permanent medical doctors for improved health care service delivery in all our staff clinics; support of the NRC Board and management in our quest for a better salary scale; rehabilitation and re-equipping of rest houses at crew changing/train stabling stations for the running crew and other line staff; staff sensitization for and commencement of registration for housing under NHF as well as Group Life Assurance Scheme (GLAS); among many others. As you are all aware, we held our 22nd National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Enugu on Thursday, 18th December, 2014, where issues affecting the welfare of the generality of staff were carefully considered and useful resolutions were made with strategies aimed at achieving best results drawn. The theme of the NEC meeting was ‘The Role of Effective Rail Transport Mode in the Achievement of Socio-economic Growth’. In no distant date, the Union, in its usual and continued unison with SSA, will commence activities with renewed commitment to make year 2015 a year of unprecedented satisfaction and more meaningful representation for all members and workers. As we journey together with great hope and prayers through this year and faithfully into the coming year, may I use this opportunity to implore you all to be more punctual, productive and dedicated to work so that together we can achieve a better and stronger Nigerian Railway we all can be proud of. Our dedication and commitment for a more vibrant Union must remain unflinching. On behalf of the Union and myself, I hereby wish you all, our irrepressible sister Union (Senior Staff Association), the management and the NRC Board God’s abundant blessings this yuletide and a safe voyage into a blessed and more prosperous 20i5. Thank you very much and may God continue to bless us all. Amen. Signed Comrade Raphael B. Okoro President General, NUR President, Africa Railway Workers Union (ARWU)
