NIGERIA: VOTE AT THE U.N. SECURITY COUNCIL. Nigerias vote and how it went. The media creates a notion making it appear that the resolution failed because of Nigeria. The resolution was a blind alley or bound to fail from the interpretations of international law. 9 votes was needed as Palestine pushed for a resolution for a bid ending the Isreali occupation of the territorial lines that existed before the capture of West Bank,East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip in 1967. HOW THEY VOTED The bid failed which got a vote from Jordan who presented the resolution,Russia,China,Chad,France,Luxembourg,Argentina and Chile. U.S and Australia voted against the resolution. UK,Lithuania,South Korea,Rwanda and Nigeria abstained. (If any of these voted for the resolution it would have had 9 votes not just Nigeria.) ARTICLE 27. Another vote outside the initial one would have been determined by the P-5 or Permanent 5; comprising of US,UK,China,France and Russia and if any of these votes against the resolution it would have failed) The initial vote which Nigeria abstained was merely procedural in that Nigerias vote does not rest on the finality of the outcome but the US. Nigerias vote would not have been conclusive. Even if they had the required 9 votes it would have been vetoed by the United States. See Article 27 of the UN.Charter. Simply put, after the initial votes if the resolution had made it to 9 votes. There would have been a subsequent voting of the P-5 where the US would have voted against hence the bid would have failed, because for the resolution to fly the P-5 must all vote for the resolution. WHY THE BID FAILED? The bid failed because the U.S was against it.The Negroponte Doctrine .i.e That the US as a policy will always oppose any resolution concerning Isreali/Palestinian condemning Israel without condemning the terrorist groups The bid was ill timed as even the average Palestinian see the bid coming too quick. THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT The Palestinian President has already signed a paper proposing to be a member of the ICC. It hopes to hold Israel accountable for crimes in the occupation. Meanwhile, the Israeli President is calling on the ICC to reject this calling Palestine an appendage of the Hammas. Sadly, over 25 years of negotiation is fast falling apart. More sad how the media is misdirecting the world. CONCLUSION My wish is to see the parties go back to the drawing board given the casualties recorded these years, and find a lasting solution.
