NINOY AQUINO DAY The Bureau of Immigration (BI) joins the nation in the celebration of “Ninoy Aquino Day” which commemorates the assassination and death anniversary of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr. It is declared a national non-working holiday in the Philippines observed annually on the 21st of August pursuant to Republic Act 9256. Senator Benigno Aquino was one of the figures who were instrumental in ending the Martial Law in the Philippines as well as the vocal opponent of former President Ferdinand Marcos. In 1980, Aquino suffered a heart attack and was allowed to move to the United States to receive medical treatment. Although the Senator lived in a foreign land, he continued his advocacy for Philippine freedom against martial law. -jls Picture reference: philnews.ph/2013/08/20/ninoy-aquino-day-august-21-2013-special-non-working-holiday Picture reference: jeffrbriones.tumblr/page
