NLB has created its own crisis resulting in losing the trust and confidence of the public to which it serves. It admitted to have received a single complaint about the books and hastily withdrew them and burnt them. In the first instance NLB selected and included them in their collection. Then when the issue of pro-family was raised they changed their minds. This action is tantamount to banning of books. They claimed that they follow the policy of government ministries but the ministries concerned have not declared the banning of the books. The silence of the authorities on this controversy of NLB is deafening. Will the NLB engage now in culling all the childrens books and have a hugh bonfire. What is their understanding of pro-family in our multi-religious society? We have a diversity of views about the nature of the family. The challenge is to create tolerance and understanding when we differ from one another in our pluralistic community. Certainly the public library is to provide information about different views and allow the reading public to make their informed opinion.
