Currently, an injured officer gets Sh50,000 as compensation while the families of those killed on duty get Sh21,000. The proposed insurance cover forms part of the reforms in the National Police Service. Uncertainty has gripped country’s police ranks over the cancellation of a much-awaited comprehensive medical cover for police officers in the country. The group medical and life insurance covers 107,000 serving police and prison officers and their families was to take effect, according to the government pronouncements, from July 1, this year. However,after tenders were procured through a restricted tender method from a list of approved insurance firms, only the comprehensive group life cover was awarded to Pioneer Assurance Company at a contract sum of Sh1.7 billion as the lowest evaluated bidder. None of the firms that had bid for the Sh 1.8 billion medical cover matched the tender conditions and hence it was cancelled. The developments have elicited frustrations among police officers amid fears that the cancellation will push even further the projected implementation of the cover beyond July. By July 1, all police officers were expected to have full insurance cover as one way of motivating and protecting them. #OLE_LENKU Yesterday, however, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku said the medical cover had been cancelled but was quick to reassure police officers that the insurance scheme was on course insisting that there “should be no cause for alarm.” “It is true they have cancelled (the tender for the medical cover) and the Interior ministry together with the National Treasury are now looking at the best option of re-issuing the tender,.
