NOAH - terrifically entertaining with some inspired visuals, and a bedrock performance by Russell Crowe, Noah is also completely unexpected -- in that it was pleasantly surprising to see a former enfant terrible indie darling so successfully mount and incredibly traditional, big Hollywood entertainment. Not that Aaronofskys impish impulses dont come through -- hes not repressing himself to make something anonymous -- but rather he takes his weirdest, artsiest ideas, and deftly turns them in to broad, audience-pleasing fun that is, really the sequel to Lord of the Rings in all but an intellectual-property sense. Interpersonally, Aaronofskys characters are still intimately presented, but the scale and sense of give-em-what-they-came for is pure Cecil B. DeMille, and incredibly satisfying. Unlike DeMille, the presentation of the characters is personal an intense, not the Classics Illustrated performances of Charlton Heston, but in every other way its grand explody fun; its essentially the Batman Begins of Bible movies. Serious/fun. A-
