NOLA 2(New Orleans, Louisiana) How to explain this place to someone thats never been... Its like Freo on a good day, on steroids. Its boobs, booze, food, art, culture, history, museums, bums etc etc and Bourbon street. Our trip consisted of 6 days and countless amazing meals. We managed another couple of walking tours one being a French Quarter culinary tour the other a historical French Quarter tour. Both I feel are a must if you want to get a real feel for the vibe and history of this town. Food along with jazz are two things that glue this city together and bring it to life all in the same breath. So to learn of how the Creole and Cajun cuisine came about, how those names came to be and why jazz is apart of this town like no other was nothing short of interesting. With our knowledge of where to eat and what to see and do we tackled the next few days with food stops as the basis for our days from fresh crab cake sandwiches and to die for Mothers po-boys to the Coops jambalaya I didnt have one bad meal the whole time I was there. Nor did I here a musician that sounded terrible. Much like Memphis and Nashville in Nola there are just so many musicians looking to make a break or get a gig that if your not the next BB King or Louis Armstrong put your instrument away and leave town. All this food and music is obviously crowned by the beauty that is the open container law, basically legal street drinking as long as it not in glass. This all comes to a head on either Bourbon street or Frenchmans street. Frenchmans for the real jazz and Bourbon for the party and sin. Given it was not the holiday season anymore and the yanks for the most part had gone back to there dreary lives elsewhere across the country youd be forgiven to think it would be quiet in the two spots, but youd be dead wrong. In Nola the party never stops. This never ending party lead us to a belter night with two Melbourenites Josh and Alyssa. We had met these two back in Atlanta about a month prior and Callum happened to stumble across them on Saturday afternoon whilst checking out the buzz in the quarter. One thing lead to another and we met them out on Bourbon street that night. Now given that theyd just trekked in from Vegas, on the bus for two days, where they got married and lost all their luggage we thought it only fitting to get right wankered drunk. So the night wore on and I the drinks flowed and I somehow managed to find myself with an older married woman hanging off me like a bad smell whilst in one of the many bars we hopped through that night, luckily her friend dragged her home and away from me before I did something stupid or her hubby got there. But if only that were the best part, at some point late in the night a nameless one of the group(not me) found themselves violently getting to know the establishments facilities for a little while. With this we thought hey the night may end here but at least it was a good one, however we were wrong. By some sort of southern miracle the rest of us witnessed the best second wind since the 04 ALCS and twenty minutes later the party continued like not a chuck was thrown. It was truly a sight to behold. Nola is full of museums, covering every aspect of the cities history and more. From museums on voodoo, pirates and medicine to the two I snuck a peak at. The D-day ww2 and hurricane Katrina museums. Now as far as museums go I myself have not come across a better set up then that of the D-day museum. With interactive displays, videos, artifacts and scale models it takes you through the two sides of the US involvement in ww2. If any of you reading are war buffs or just interested in how the US helped stop the war a save our bacon at the same time this is the place to go. As Im not the fastest reader in the world the displays and video presentations makes this so user friendly its hard to fault the place. As for the Katrina museum again a setup designed to keep people of all ages engrossed in the information. Both places I took out a lot more than I ever knew or would of found out otherwise. Katrina was just an absolute shitstrorm of disaster, incompetence, ill preparedness and stupidity so too see how the city has come back from it all is just a credit to the strength of its people. My other little adventure was an 11th hour call up to the Saints game on Sunday due to someones ill health. With minutes to shower and get to the game chauffeur Callum rushed me off to grab Josh and head to the stadium. Ive never been to a sporting event where the dj/announcer just got it so right. From the chants and calls of him and the crowd to hearing Pantera over the speakers I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. The best part being that for the second time in three games(both saints games)that Id been to the match went to overtime. This was handy as we missed the whole first quarter due to running late. That Sunday night ended on a high with us all headed back to Bourbon for some half price cocktails at the hard rock and Josh, Alyssa and I indulging in the local dessert delicacy of beneighs in the wee small hours. For those playing at home thats a deep fried square donut DOUCED in icing sugar. Its cholesterol and diabetes all in one neat little sugar filled bag. Again like last time I was in Nola I did spend a night on Frenchmans and at the casino and much like the previous trip it was well worth it. DVA would be my place of choice down there Nola is place that if I had to recommend to anyone of my friends be they gay, straight, black, white, bogan or sophisticated, one spot in the USA to go where your guaranteed to have a blast this would be it. I didnt go into much detail and Im sure theres stuff I missed but given I have no photos to jog my memory and it was nearly two months ago now I think I did ok. Feel free to check out cals blog though his is always better.
