NORA NEWSLETTER September 2013 Dear residents of greater Norwood, We hope that this will be the first of many newsletters to the community we represent! Norwood and surrounding suburbs have their fair share of problems, but we are confident that with your support we can overcome them. 1. Grant Avenue Business Node The principal challenges of Grant Avenue and the surrounding area remain illegal car guards and shoppers being harassed by hawkers. Over the years we have had raids by the JMPD and the Police but, after arresting these illegals and taking them to court, cases are always thrown out by the magistrates as no alternative “accommodation” has been provided for those charged! Many park at Spar to avoid these problems. NORA does employ a young man who sweeps the pavements and gets rid of weeds, and we are very pleased to see that NORA residents tend to their own pavements. We are thrilled that the old Taiyo building in Grant Avenue has been bought by a young entrepreneur who has exciting plans for the site. Watch that space! 2. Norwood Primary NORA continuously tries to help Norwood Primary. We were recently successful in getting the Dischem Foundation to donate R65,000 worth of stationery to the school. The school is a government institution, and help of this nature is very necessary! 3. Norwood Library Norwood Library was recently given a facelift by Orange Grove resident Nicole Heiman. Nicole organized donors for paint and volunteers to paint a mural at the library. Well done Nicole! 4. Metered Parking ACE parking, recently rolled out in Parkhurst to much controversy, is coming to Norwood. There has been much opposition to this, include a demonstration by Councillor Marcelle Ravid and Eda Meltzer and a 1,000 signature petition, but to no avail. We will continue to be represented on the structures engaging with the JMPD on this. One positive outcome of this is that it may force illegal car guards out of the area. Remember that shoppers have 1 hour free parking at Spar. 1. Mandela Day NORA has had success in dealing with illegal recycling activities in a number of parks in Norwood and the surrounding suburbs, and urges residents to report illegal dumping and recycling to City Parks. To honour Nelson Mandela on his birthday, NORA organized a clean-up of Norwood Park. A number of residents got their hands dirty, and the park was left in immaculate condition! Appreciation must be shown to Elain Steinberg, who not only cleaned up Norwood Park, but also did a massive clean-up in the vicinity of the Police barracks! 2. Norwood Rooftop Market Another exciting development is the relocation of the Rosebank Rooftop Market to Norwood Mall. By all accounts this has been a huge success, and adds to the buzz of the area. NORA aims to have permanent table at the Market to advertise Norwood attractions and drum up support for our activities. 3. Norwood Heritage The City of Johannesburg recently erected two heritage plaques on homes in High Road in The Gardens that belonged to the Harmel and Weinberg families, to commemorate their contribution to a democratic South Africa. The plaques were unveiled on a tour that included a number of other historic sites in greater Norwood. The area now has three heritage plaques, including one at the Gandhi home in Pine Street. 4. Facebook We have a new Facebook page – “Like” the Republic of Norwood at https://facebook/pages/The-Republic-of-Norwood/191016564337925 to keep up with the latest news. 5.
