NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP? Sleep is medicine. It is one of the complex but simple processes the body undergoes; the brain becomes much active during sleep and other systems of the body use the period for repair and restoration. Insomnia is difficulty falling and or staying asleep. There are a number of reasons why you may not be getting enough sleep but here are some few things to help you sleep better. 1. Be ready for sleep. Go to bed only if you want to sleep. If you think you cannot sleep, you cant sleep. 2. Free yourself from all emotions, anger, excitement, fear etc. It may involve putting off the television hours before sleep. Clear your mind from all thoughts. You need your sleep more than all those things during your sleep period. 3. The room is not a recreational or rehabilitation place. It is solely for sleep and should be used as such. Being indoors for long may affect your sleep. 4. Keep your room well ventilated and at a very suitable temperature and humidity. The body temperature drops throughout the night while you sleep. Sleeping in a cool dark room helps, as sleep, controlled by the pineal gland is much dependent on the amount of light entering the eye. 5. Take away everything that will distract and disturb your sleep. Radio, television etc. If you need some music to put you to sleep adjust the volume accordingly. Make your bed as comfortable as possible and wear suitable clothes. Some prefer to sleep naked and it medically proven to be helpful. 6. Sleep at regular times and intervals. This helps your body to adjust to your sleeping and waking time. This means that shift workers will have to sleep at regular planned times of the day in dark rooms to help them sleep better. 7.Do exercise regularly. Exercise keeps the body in shape, reduces pain that may affect sleep from release of the hormone called endorphins and also relax the body. The fatigue from exercise alone is enough to put you to sleep. 8. Take a warm shower before sleeping. It refreshens the body and relaxes the muscles, making sleep much enjoying. 9. Some medical conditions like diabetes, chronic pain, anxiety etc may affect your sleep. Visit a doctor if you are or think may be having a condition that disturbs your sleep. 10. Try alternate means of getting sleep and do not take sleep medications for more than a week. They will lose their effect with prolonged usage and the rebound insomnia that will occur afterwards may be worse than before. 11. Sleep is also more enjoying when shared with a loved one; loneliness disturbs sleep. 12. Also pray before sleeping, it makes the mind feel relaxed and secured. 13. See a sleep therapist if you still have difficulty sleeping.
