NOTE: I posted this response (below) today in a very long thread of comments which began yesterday. I want to be sure that this doesnt get buried in that thread so Im beginning a new post here and including the DNA story for reference. Feel free to share but please include my comments here if you do. Thanks... There have been numerous posts on various FB pages and other social media sites concerning that this not devolve into a witch hunt or a pogram-like persecution of individuals simply because they belong to a gang, are of the wrong color skin or are simply poor. Nobody that I know of is even suggesting that approach, including myself. Lets be very clear here that the police know exactly who the players are here who are terrorizing our community. Lets be very clear who the victims are and who are the perpetrators. The residents of this community are the victims and many of those residents are of color, are poor and even unwitting gang members who would rather have a job and a family than be on the streets. Bang Da Hitta is not a victim, he is a perpertrator whose very presence in the community is bringing the war to the streets of Rogers Park. The gang members who torched his car are not the victims. They are the perpetrators whose very presence in the community is bringing the war to the streets of Rogers Park. Gangs exist all across this city and the suburbs, including our neighbor to the north. Gangs themselves are not necessarily violent nor do they necessarily perpetrate a full scale war. Gang membership is not reason to extract people from a community and in fact is reason that so many of us would like to work to bring these youth into the mainstream. But let there be no doubt that the police know who the handful of thugs are in this community who are hell-bent on waging a war against their rivals and have no concern for the safety of innocent individuals, have no sense of value for human life, have no concern for the terror that theyre reigning down up our community and sure as hell dont want to be acclimated into the mainstream of society. It is a serious mistake to view these few in the same light that we view others who are in need of our intervention and will benefit from it. These few violent individuals need to be removed from our community using whatever legal means necessary and in some case creatively apply the law to do so in order that we can get on with our lives and work to repair the lives of the majority of those youth who need our help and will benefit from it. And THAT is what Im recommending we do.
