NOTE TO BUDDING AND ASPIRING REPUBLICAN POLITICIANS... Heres a quick 34 second education on how to elegantly couch racist and elitist actions while sounding thoughtful and well intentioned. NBCs MTP moderator Chuck Todd asked Oklahoma City Republican Mayor Mick Cornett how he managed to get his deep red city voters to back tax increases. He responded by saying: I think the citizens of Oklahoma City have begun to differentiate between the type of government they dont mind paying and the type they dont like to pay for. I think they like capital projects they can go up and touch and feel and they know theyre going to be long lasting. I think theyre less enthused about social programs that they really wonder about how efficiently run they are. I think theyre less enthused about social programs that they really wonder about how efficiently run they are. Translation: Capital projects = corporate suites in both Chesapeake Energy Arena, home of the Oklahoma City Thunder and the new minor league ballpark for the AAA affiliate of the Houston Astros. These projects also include a U.S. Olympic rowing and training facility, and new, expensive residential housing, hardly the playground of the poor. Yet, Oklahomas poverty level at 15 percent is still above the national average, 30 percent among African-Americans and 29 percent among Hispanics and 23 percent in the Native American community. However, the more than 330,00 poor whites outnumber all three minorities combined. Furthermore, Oklahoma is the second overall worse state in the nation for women with the number one incarceration rate in the country, less than 20 percent of girls graduate high school and fewer than one in seven achieve a college degree. Yet Mayor Cornett can go on national television and tell the audience his voters question the efficiency of social programs. Since theyre operated under the same administration thats investing for the rich, that question is kinda stupid dontcha think? Racism and classism. #Codespeak There. I said it.
