NOTES FROM PRESIDENT JONATHANS SOUTH AFRICA TRIP - 1. In SA, President Jonathan attended a meeting on terrorism in Africa & inauguration of President Zuma for a 2nd term. A successful outing. 2. Meeting on terrorism held on sidelines of Pres. Zumas inauguration was attended by Nigeria, SA, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Congo,Ghana & CIv 3. Their Excellencies discussed modalities for defining a stronger framework for partnership in combating terrorism. 4. The meeting on terrorism in SA resolved that no single country can on its own deal with the challenge of terrorism in Africa. 5. Their Excellencies noted that a continental approach involving all African states will strengthen the war against terrorism. 6. Terrorists can run from one country to the other but across Africa they must not be allowed any hiding place. The meeting condemned BH. 7. The meeting on terrorism held in South Africa is preparatory towards an AU Summit in Guinea Bissau in June focusing on terrorism in Africa. 8. Their Excellencies agreed to set up a committee of selected rep. Ministers to prepare a framework for further action before June meeting. 9. The meeting on terrorism held in South Africa is preparatory towards an AU Summit in Equatorial Guinea in June, on terrorism in Africa. 10. The proposed Committee of Ministers will report to PM of Ethiopia. Further deliberations will continue in Equatorial Guinea, June 25-26. 11. The meeting in SA is a significant follow up to Paris Summit last week & perfectly consistent with AU conventions/ resolutions on terrorism. Reuben Abati
