NOTES ON NYC The wind is coming down from the storm in Boston. Its not carrying the snow just its knife like promise of it on its keen edge. I leave New York tomorrow to start a two day journey back to the old one I love but its a sad parting. Contradiction, New York is a contradiction. Incalculable wealth in the canyons of glass and steel at Wall Street yet aching poverty in the brownstones of The Bronx, ugly broken tangles of freeways yet the unequalled beauty of the Manhattan skyline at dusk and it is alien yet utterly familiar. A sprawling, teaming mass of human confusion yet Woody Allen, Scorsese, Coppola and many, many others have walked us down these streets with Blondie, Paul Simon, Velvet Underground and The Ramones playing the soundtrack. New York, it gets under your skin...
