The president of the republic made the comments during the opening ceremony of the Anti-Corruption Commission (KAK) two-day international workshop yesterday in Dili. President TMR praised KAK as it had worked well in investigating corruption cases in the country. During his speech marking ceremony for the opening of the workshop, TMR also called on the international delegations to share their experiences with TimorLeste. *MSS hands over 52 houses to communities *Televizaun Timor-Leste, July 24, 2013 language source: Tetun The Ministry of Social Solidarity has officially ha nded over 52 houses to communities in Luca, the eastern district of Viquque. Minister for Social Solidarity, Maria Olinda Guterres called on beneficiaries to look after the provided houses, so that they could use them for longest time. “I am calling on all beneficiaries to look after these houses and keep them clean as it is important for our health,” she said. Viqueque District Administrator Francisco da Silva called on the Government to provide clean water for each house as there had been no water supply. *Minister Teme visits Oe-cusse Sea Port *Televizaun Timor-Leste, July 24, 2013 language source: Tetun Minister for State Administration and Territorial Management (ESTATAL), Jorge da Concecao Teme has held a visit to Oe-Cusse Sea Port to take a look closer at the construction of the port.According to TVTL [Timorese Public TV) news reporting, the construction of the port has reached 90% and it can be used for two ships at once.The Oe-Cusse Sea Port is financially funded and is constructed by the Government of Japan. *Commander Paixao to lead military mission in Guinea Bissau *Diario Nacional, July 24, 2013 language source: Tetun According to the plan, the Timorese Defense Force (F-FDTL) Deputy Commander, Brigadier General Filomeo Paixao will lead a military mission in Guinea Bissau. Speaking to journalists, F-FDTL Commander, Major General Lere Anan Timur said Commander Paixao should have held military mission in Guinea Bissau on July 15, but it had been postponed. Commander Lere affirmed that, Timor-Leste took part in this military mission as it was a member of Portuguese Language Speaking Countries (CPLP). “Our deputy chief of staff will share experiences that we have after the country gained its independence in the development of the defense force,” Lere said. *Minister for finance’s residence construction unknown to ADN *Diario Nacional, July 24, 2013 language source: Tetun Director for ADN [National Development Agency], Samuel Marcal said the process construction of Minister for Finance, Emilia Pires’ official residence in Farol, Dili was unknown to him. Marcal affirmed that the residence for the minister was constructed before ADN was established.”The construction is unknown to me as all processes related to the construction were made by the Ministry of Finance. Whether it went through single source or tender process or not is unknown to me,” he said. He added that, the total budget which was allocated for the house construction was more than US $ 1 million. *Asylum seekers: the forgotten 99 *Independente July 24, 2013 It has been months since Zaw Win and his frightened community of 99 Rohingya muslim fled Myanmar to scape violence and persecution. Desperate to free themselves from what Zaw calls the genocide of his minority group the community has beaten a horrid path to get themselves to a place where their lives are no longer at risk. But despite the traitorous journey this is no happy tale. A month to this day (July 24, 2013) since they put their lives in the hands of smuggler in Makassar, Indonesia, who promised to get them to Australia where they sought political asylum, the group has no found themselves somewhat imprisoned on the tiny island of Liran Island, Indonesia, 40 kilometers off the coast of Timor-Leste. An island that is home to around305 locals, and an island that is battling to support another 99 mouths desperately in need of flood, water and medical attention.How the group got to be on the insignificant island has some human rights advocates up in arms, and indeed, also the ex-president of Timor-Leste Timor-Leste, Jose Ramos Horta, who has publicly condoned the failure of Timor-Leste Government to provide humanitarian assistance when their lacking vessel ran aground off the south west of the island nation in Viqueque and Venilale on July 7.
