NOVEMBER 1961: Elizabeth Taylor, 29, in Rome, where she was currently working on the multi -million dollar production of Cleopatra - a film that literally took two years to complete. In September 1959, 20th Century Fox Studio asked Elizabeth to appear in the film. Not being very interested in such a project, she jokingly said that she would do it for a million dollars...figuring that they would not take her seriously. Well, they did and as soon as she completed her contractual obligations at MGM, she and her (sometimes irritating) husband, Eddie Fisher traveled to London in the summer of 1960... where they film was originally slated to be made. After Elizabeth suffered from a string of serious illnesses, including Meningitis, Malta Fever, and near fatal Staphylococcal Pneumonia, the production moved to the warmer climate of Italy in the autumn of 1961. Elizabeth, due to the endless time constraints, renegotiated her contract and asked for 10% of the gross profits that the film would make once released. That calculated move eventually made her seven million dollars. Personally, she was miserable with Fisher. After her illness, he suddenly transformed from husband to a dotting nursemaid and she certainly didnt want that for the rest of her life. She knew that she wanted much more than she presently already had. Life had to be better than the way that she was living.
