NP still undecided on standard bearer for 2016 presidential polls Written by Angie M. Rosales Monday, 14 July 2014 00:00 font size decrease font size increase font size Print Be the first to comment! The Nacionalista Party (NP) had yet to make up its mind on who its standard bearer will be despite the pronouncement of member Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano of running for the presidency, as Sen. Cynthia Villar said the party may even consider Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. as standard bearer “if he becomes very popular.” Villar, wife of NP president and former Sen. Manny Villar, said all members of the NP can indicate their plans but their being standard bearer will depend on what will happen. “If in the process Marcos becomes very popular and he can run beyond being a senator, he’s allowed to do that,” Villar said. “Our party doesn’t dictate on its members and tell them you can’t do this, you can’t do that. They are allowed to do what they plan like Senator Marcos, he’s running for re-election (at the minimum). There is nothing wrong for him campaigning because he is up for re-election,” she said. Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos, the mother of the senator, had earlier indicted that Bongbong was qualified to run for president in 2016. What the NP wanted is to have a winnable candidate, we are happy with that, Villar added. Villar admitted that other than Marcos other NP front runners for the 2016 polls are Cayetano and Antonio Trillanes IV. Villar also hinted that her husband is still not out of the running as NP standard bearer. “My husband may run again for president if it will be given to him in a silver platter,” she added. “Those running for the presidency has a destiny. Even if you plan for it but if it’s not yours, it’s not yours. Those who does not have plans for it, becomes president. So planning is not much of a factor,” she said. Villar also expressed hope that Congress will put in its priority list a bill requiring food manufacturers to put “eye-catching” nutrition label on the packages of their products. “We should be able to tell before buying a product whether or not it is good for our family based on the information clearly provided on the label,” Villar said. Sher said Congress should prioritize all the health-related legislation as the nation celebrates Nutrition Month this July. Villar said her Senate Bill 146 will improve consumers’ understanding of food products they purchase in the market. “We need this law that will assist consumers build a healthier lifestyle by educating them on the composition and nutritional value of the food they eat. We can see now that more and more people consult labels in assessing the value of these products,” Villar said. Published in Nation
