NRA: SPEEDI not to be used in evaucation plans Japans nuclear regulator says it has decided not to use an emergency system for predicting the spread of nuclear fallout, calling it unreliable. The system known as SPEEDI is supposed to predict how radioactive substances would spread from a damaged plant. It is based on weather and topography data. The system covers Japans nuclear power stations and other facilities. But the systems predictions were not utilized during the Fukushima nuclear disaster. In fact, they were not released for nearly 2 months after the accident. Officials of the Nuclear Regulation Authority, or NRA, said at a meeting on Wednesday that the use of inaccurate predictions could increase the risk of local residents being exposed to radiation. A government investigative panel into the accident had said there was a possibility for the government to utilize SPEEDIs data. But another panel by the Diet said the predictions are not accurate enough to be used for evacuation decisions during the accident. The NRA decided that in future they will not use SPEEDI to plan the evacuation of the general populace. After the Fukushima accident the regulator changed its policy to say evacuation plans should based on actual radiation readings in the disaster area using the SPEEDI data as a reference. Local governments then asked the regulator to clarify how to use SPEEDI data as a reference. youtu.be/VBI9MtL5HuU
