NS: Early Saturday start for LFA 34 lobster fishermen [YARMOUTH, NS] - Looks like Mother Nature has done what a ballot vote failed to. She has delayed the start of the lobster fishery by nearly a week. Following a Wednesday, Nov. 27, afternoon conference call it is been decided that dumping day will begin at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30 for LFA 34 off southwestern Nova Scotia. The season was supposed to have started on Monday, Nov. 25, but strong forecasted winds throughout the week have kept boats tied up. Initially it had been suggested that boats might get out on Friday but the forecast for the remainder of the week, it was felt, still didnt make that in the best interest to go out, or to have fishermen having to load or adjust traps on their boats the day before. In the interest of safety it was determined Saturdays forecast was the more favourable one to start the season with. LFA 33 along the south shore will also begin its season on Saturday, with its traditional 7 a.m. start time. This has been the longest period that weather has ever delayed the opening of a season. An opening day protocol that was put in place in LFA 34 a few years ago stipulates that winds above 25 knots will automatically postpone the start of the season. When the season does get underway on Saturday, as there always is there will be marine and air resources in place ready to respond if fishermen run into any problems. The opening day of the lobster fishery is considered to be the most dangerous time in the season as boats loaded with lobster traps head out to sea to dump their traps. Fishermen are permitted to start hauling catches at one minute after midnight. Tina Comeau The Vanguard
