NSW Minister for Fair Trading Matthew Mason-Cox attended a special meeting with Sydney repairers at replacement vehicle provider Right2Drive in Peakhurst on 10 November. Nearly 100 repairers attended the meeting, double the amount anticipated, from a large geographical area of Sydney. Nigel McBride of Right2Drive outlined the issues under discussion, referring to alleged bullying tactics by insurers towards customers and repairers, cost cutting that was affecting safety and the effect on local economies when repair shops closed down. Mason-Cox told the repairers that he had been visiting shops in Campbelltown, Sutherland, Bankstown and in regional NSW as well as insurance companies. “It seems to me that there is customer steering going on by insurers and that’s not on,” he said. He discussed the need to put some “teeth” into the code of conduct and was investigating how to put in place a dispute resolution system that worked. He also said he had written to the federal government about making these changes. Mason-Cox said some of the parliamentary recommendations had to be addressed at the federal level but that he was looking at the recommendations very closely and was determined to see that small businesses got a fair go. He then invited repairers to have their say. paintandpanel.au/news/minister-hints-at-anti-steering-regulation?utm_medium=email
