NSW is tightening rules about unlicensed tradespeople working in the construction industry, with calls for prison sentences for dodgy contractors to be a deterrent. Meanwhile, licensing laws have been tightened to allow Fair Trading NSW to take into account any actions or behaviour of those who have previously been involved in corporate liquidations (i.e. company directors and associates) for up to three years prior to the liquidation when assessing licensing applications. These changes aim to protect both contractors and consumers from builders who declare one business bankrupt before opening under a different business name.
