NTSA/TRAFFIC CORRUPTION. Widespread corruption among traffic police and owners of un roadworthy vehicles are a major cause of road accidents during festive seasons in the country. The revised traffic offense fines are a recipe for the traffic police which they have turned into cash cows without taking due regard to the safety of Kenyans, Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri has said. Speaking in Nakuru , Ngunjiri called on the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to ensure proper road signage, speed limit for that particular section of the road and erection of pumps where appropriate. He faulted speed governor enforcement officers for hiding in the bush other than putting up an open office from where they can monitor the speeding vehicles and charge those found flouting the traffic rules. ‘These clandestine activities of such officers are propelling corruption in the police force to levels that are unprecedented to the detriment of ensuring safety on our roads,’ said Ngunjiri. The MP disclosed that modern cars have been designed in such a way that on high speed they consume less fuel unlike when they are driven within the new traffic speed limits. He warned that speed does not cause accidents per se but the collusion among the traffic police and owners of un roadworthy vehicles whose cars are allowed on the road at a fee during this festive season. Notably, the Traffic (Amendment) Act 2012 brings into force heavy penalties for offenders, who will be handed longer jail terms and or higher fines than previously. For instance, any person found driving or in charge of a public service vehicle while intoxicated will be liable to a fine ‘not exceeding one hundred thousand shillings and or two years imprisonment; up from the prior fine of ‘fifteen thousand shillings and or two years imprisonment for the same offense. Drunken driving has been linked to some of the deaths on the roads and the Government is keen to rein in on drunk drivers. BY:Dennis Rasto
