NUGGET #55 JESUS - HE WHO IS TO COME Yesterday I established that Yeshua was a Jew and that He employed rabbinic (Jewish) methods of teaching. Over the past few nuggets I have been talking about the rabbinic method called remez - the art of referring back to something that His audience knew and understood. This is very important here as we look at what Yeshua actually says about Himself. * I am going to do this in three parts - so please dont miss the next two nuggets. Background: Matt 11:2-6 “Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.” [KJV] Why did John use these words? “Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?” The question is at best strange and could almost be an affront. Actually he probably asked something like this: אתה הבא - “Atah habaa?” In the Hebrew mind - הבא – “Habaa” was synonymous with Messiah. Without an understanding of what is going on here there is no way we will understand the importance of this encounter. Do you remember what John had said about Yeshua? Luke 3:16-17 “John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but ONE MIGHTIER THAN I COMETH, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose... Where did he get this idea? From Daniel 7:13-14 “I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.” [KJV] This is where we stop today - John calling Yeshua habaa - the One who is to come. Contd... tomorrow. Shalom!
