#NUTSHELL – OCTOBER 10th — THE OFFERING – 2 Corinthians 9:6-15: Someone once said, “By the way some people give, they must think the Church or their favorite charity is coin-operated.” Perhaps you’ve never thought of it that way, but one of the reasons we don’t give more to the Lord is that we’re caught in the materialism of today’s society. One of the ways to escape the slavery to “things” is to give more than we think we can. The Bible says, “Now about the collection … on the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income” (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). Samuel Logan Brengle, a leader of the Salvation Army movement in America once said this about the practice of tithing, “I tithed every cent of my money even when I was getting my education, and was so poor and in debt that I wore celluloid collars and ate oatmeal almost exclusively. The money I tithed was borrowed. The devil said, ‘Here why do you do this? This is not your money it belongs to your creditors.’” I said, “Devil you’re a liar. This is my Father’s money, it’s only passing through my hands and He shall have His tenth, and God blessed me according to His word, in a remarkably short time I was able to pay back every cent I owed.” Remember the words of our Lord Jesus, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” I know things can bring temporary happiness, but they are unable to replace or produce the joy of giving to the Lord and His church. If joy is missing from your life, maybe the Lord is talking to you today about your giving. Is it a “coin-drop” and not a proportioned gift of a tithe? Why not start giving this Sunday? A bumper sticker read “Tithe if you love Jesus – anybody can honk.”
