#NUTSHELL – OCTOBER 31st — BE READY – 2 Peter 3:10-13: A morning TV show recently showed a film clip of an American soldier who had just returned from the mid-East. His return was a bit earlier than expected, so he showed up unannounced at his daughter’s school. A film crew was allowed to capture the scene. When he entered the classroom, his daughter looked up and saw him in stunned disbelief then she burst into tears of joy, covered her mouth with her hands and ran into his embrace. Lifting her off her feet, he hugged her tightly as she sobbed and classmates cheered. It was impossible to watch the scene without feeling great emotion. Maybe that’s a small picture of how we’ll feel when Jesus comes again. Our pastor often says, “Jesus is coming, be ready!” Eggs and oaths are easily broken. The future might look a little bleak, but that light at the end of the tunnel isn’t a train coming. It is our Lord’s promise of His soon return. It is the promise of the Bible, the concluding promise of Scripture, “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming quickly.’” Until He comes in fulfillment of that promise, we have all the other promises of the Bible to sustain us, comfort us and give us strength daily. This promise of His coming is a tightly-wrapped, power packed, portion of Scripture written by God and designed to encourage us now in our life in a way that corresponds perfectly to His all-sufficient grace. The Lord desires for us to believe and long for His appearing. 2 Timothy 4:8 says, “Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord will award to me on that day – and only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing.”
